Trent With A Student

“Our son Calvin, who is fourteen years old has really grown under Trent’s tutelage. Trent has, not only, provided support and encouragement, and excellence in teaching (and he is a good role model), but he has done this in such a way that has brought Calvin a wonderful sense of joy while learning to play the drums. Trent is a very special teacher and I highly recommend him as a parent of ten children, all of whom have taken music lessons.”

Joe Lynch – Frederick, MD

“In approaching the drum set, Trent has helped me to realize the balance between fundamental skill mastery and musicality. His goal oriented methodology is logical, progressive, and customized to my needs. In that way, Trent has allowed me the time and space to develop into the kind of drummer I want to be, rather than the result of some “program.” Trent understands that music is as much about the mind as it is muscles and movements. Aside from being able to hold my own on the drums, my journey with Trent has led me to an awareness of musical dynamics and feeling. I’ve developed a deeper appreciation and understanding of a wide range of drumming styles and feels. Most importantly, Trent has helped me develop a kind of musical freedom and empowerment that keeps me motivated and will allow me to continue to develop a musical voice for a lifetime.”

Carolyn Salamon (parent) – Frederick, MD

“Trent has provided lessons to my son since 2011. He has such a great disposition and coupled with his innate talent, love for music and great ability to teach – his skill is just…. well…. contagious!! My son has progressed at the pace he is comfortable with and Trent works with the parents and student to establish goals and reach them. I HIGHLY recommend Trent – he is AWESOME!!”

Joe Crawley – Sterling, VA

“I studied with Trent for about 4 years through high school. He helped narrow my vision from a teenage punk rocker into a serious dedicated musician. Along with developing a positive outlook and practice routine with my drumming, my friendship with Trent and his sound advise helped me mature and develop as a person as well. For that I am extremely grateful. Currently I am a successful drum teacher, and owe my approach and drive to educate and improve the lives of all my students to my time with Trent.”

Rob Dickinson (parent) – Sterling, VA

“An extremely accomplished musician, Trent is as strong and versatile a teacher as he is a player. While his method and strategy are very well planned, perhaps Trent’s greatest talent may be his ability to tailor the lesson plan to ideally suit each student’s unique personality, motivation and (ever progressing) skill level. I should note that my son has also seen a positive carryover into school, as he’s maintained an ‘A’ average in music/band since beginning lessons with Trent three years ago. Always smiling and enthusiastic, Trent is also very accommodating with scheduling issues that arise from time to time. All of these things create an overall teaching experience where the student wants to learn – and actually wants to practice! – and an environment for the parent where coordinating the lessons is flexible and easy.”

Stephen Randall – Urbana, MD

“I studied with Trent for about 5 years, before unfortunately having to call it quits due to other conflicts. Even now as I practice the exercises and their variations, trying to master each little nuance so that my improvisation will have one more tiny tool, I wish I could have Trent watching over my shoulder on that old plastic set, casually throwing out little gems that still sit in the back of my mind as I drum. Trent has been great in my formative years of drumming, and it was with him that I really discovered my niche at the set, Funk. While Trent pushed me to become a well-rounded percussionist, he really encouraged the development of my personal voice on the kit through study of Funk greats like Garibaldi, Stubblefield, Moore, and Deitch, as well as the constant reminder to always be musical. Trent’s teaching style is very relaxed, and I never felt hesitant to ask about anything. He creates an environment in which it’s both fun and easy to succeed. I now consider myself a very good drummer, and I’d attribute it to both my hard work and the lessons and motivation Trent gave me. Thank you, Trent.”

James Luttrell – Frederick, MD

“After studying with Trent for 7 years, I cannot even imagine what my life would be like without drumming. Trent offered an open-minded and soothing learning environment that challenged me to expand my perception of what it means to play drums, and helped me progress so much more than I ever thought was possible. What I appreciated the most about Trent was his willingness to work with techniques that both he and I chose, his belief in the importance of integrating a variety of styles, and his emphasis on the fact that no one ever stops learning. I now hope to join my college’s steel drum band as an auxiliary percussionist to tour in the spring while continuing projects with friends in my spare time, all thanks to Trent Renshaw.”

Mathew Jennings – Urbana, MD

“When I first started study under Trent, I was blind to where I could go. Trent Renshaw showed me how much more there was to the drum set, and just when I think I fully understand Latin or Jazz, he throws me a curveball, showing me that the possibilities of percussion are endless.”
